How to Receive Books

First Book has pioneered innovative distribution channels for making new books available, affordable and accessible to eligible programs and schools. We do this in three ways:

  • Advisory Boards like us get involved locally and raise funds to create community-level grants enabling programs that serve at least 70% children from low-income families to receive free books.
  • The First Book Marketplace is an award-winning e-commerce site that makes new books available at prices 50%-90% below retail only to organizations serving children in need. Through the Marketplace, educators are able to purchase high-quality books and educational resources at low cost and enrich the learning experience for the children they serve – from birth through high school.To be eligible to purchase through the Marketplace, an organization must:
    • Serve children where at least 70% are from low-income households (or be a Title I or Title I eligible school);
    • Not discriminate against individuals based on race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, religion or physical or mental ability.
  • The First Book National Book Bank is the only national clearinghouse for large-scale donations of children’s books from publishers to programs serving children in need. Every year the National Book Bank distributes millions of books for free from more than 90 leading children’s book publishers, with support from warehousing partners and volunteer networks. To be eligible to obtain books through the FBNBB, an organization must:
    • Serve children where at least 70% are from low-income households (or be a Title I or Title I eligible school);
    • Not discriminate against individuals based on race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, religion orphysical or mental ability.
